How to know if there are customers for your business idea
Validates your idea before releasing to the market and save yourself money and headaches.
SEPTEMBER 13, 2016
Knowing that accounts with clients who want to pay you for your services or products is vital to a good start in your company. Therefore, it is recommended that any entrepreneur validate your business idea before releasing to the market, if you want to save yourself some headaches, and if you want to leverage your time and your money.

But, what exactly is validation? The validation of an idea is simply the proof that our hypothesis is true and that the company is viable.

That hypothesis we have in mind are ideas that we could not confirm and uncertainty that we are fit.

Looking for a product or service successful
Therefore, as an entrepreneur is very important to validate your business idea to confirm your hypothesis and develop a product with more options for success. And to confirm this hypothesis, we can not do without: market surveys and opinion of your potential customers, who are really underlying the foundation of your business, for example:

Pepa has a great business idea and believes it can be successful: offering their services online as wedding planner (wedding planner). Although there is a crisis, people are still getting married and wants that unforgettable day, he thinks.

Your sister wants to marry, he said it was a brilliant idea, and her friend the same. In addition, he is good at making crafts and is very creative.

So I put hands to work to create a business plan, create a website and promote themselves through social networks.

Pepa thought it would be a matter of time, he liked what he did and his inner circle supported him. But time was passing and sees no benefit.

What do you think went wrong? It did not validate your business model and not done the right questions.

Pepa made the mistake that many things did not question because for granted. But to validate a business idea needs to question the assumptions. And Javier Megías classifies them into three blocks:

Customer hypothesis: those that are related to our potential customers, considering their characteristics and motivations. Think how they will act with our value proposition.
Hypothesis of the problem are related to the actual existence of the problem we want to solve. That is, there is a group of customers who have a problem and it is important for them than it resolved. Have you encountered this problem?
Hypothesis product / solution: this is the most subjective part, our way of solving the problem. But remember that customers do not care solution you propose, want to solve their problems. This would include all the assumptions relating to the characteristics of the product or service, your customer benefits or how to send it.
At this point, where our common sense plays a big role, it is necessary to ask the right questions to validate the hypothesis. In this case, Pepa should have been some questions as:

Are there people who actually pay for a wedding planner?

Do these people hire me through platforms where I have visibility?

Would you be willing to pay shipping costs?

It is important to know that any successful business model studying a tangible need in an identified client who feels the desire to solve this problem. This is the most important and where most have to work part, the rest will gradually comprobándose through experiments to confirm or reject hypotheses.

So the scientific reasoning would be: throw a question, create a hypothesis, validate with an experiment and took a conclusion.

Some tools to validate your business idea are:

1. Market Research
To better understand the needs of our customers and their problems, it is an essential tool market research. This is a very affordable way to clearly define the characteristics of our business idea choice.

What advantage of this method is that if done well, the chances of making a good decision is high. It is therefore necessary to make a good questionnaire and selecting a good sample to which direct our questions.

Although there are many articles on the Internet where you explain how to create surveys, remember that choosing wrong or meaningless questions can lead to making a final bad decision.

Therefore, there are companies (centered even in market research on mobile) that are devoted to minutely surveys and are responsible for sending them to the ideal client, allowing you to better know your target audience to tailor your product or service to your needs real.

Among these companies we can mention Google Insight, which offers tools to make surveys, study changes affecting the industry or anticipate market trends. Another such company is Votechimp, the application allows you to reach Millennials in a different way than do traditional surveys, through fun and play. Both have the particularity to do market research on mobile devices.

Do you think that companies like Coca Cola prestigious launching publicity campaigns and millions of dollars are spent doing market research before? Coca Cola always surprises his target and what is even better, you can play a chord.

For example, you remember one of your campaigns where the cans contained names of people. This increased sales 18%. Are your advertising strategies lightly or have made a great job behind market research?

In addition to market surveys, other methods for testing the hypothesis of your business model:

2. Interviews
The interviews will help you get an overview of the problem and to have a broader view of the product. I recommend that the appropriate number of interviews is over 10 and your questions are focused to validate your hypothesis about the problem and the solution.

The drawback of this method is that information is very subjective and therefore is not 100% reliable. Although you will be very useful at the time when people describe their problem, because it will be a powerful then take this into account in your marketing weapon.

3. Tests
The test or method A / B involves two versions (A and B), which are very similar, but with a variation that can affect user behavior. Therefore, sending two very similar versions, we can know what the reaction to a change.

Another test is the most effective smoke test. This is a quick test to check functional aspects: ensure that connections are made correctly, that the app works, that no trouble accessing the login, the buttons are going well, etc.

Ultimately, it comes to find out that all is well and that the software is stable to face trials before the final step.

For example, to see clearer this method:

Pepa, before buying resources for crafts for weddings, should have created a website and see if people requesting their services. If someone did, it would send a message saying that now was not ready message. But with this test, at least it made sure that there were people interested in their services and products.

It's not about making a quick validation and light to finish as soon as possible.

Entrepreneurs who are constantly innovating should be aware that they have to constantly experiment and thus validating their hypothesis should become a habit.

¿Has detectado ese problema?

To answer this question we must look at the company with a "financial look" and try to understand the decision facing the "general manager" that seeks to increase the resources managed, ie assets for which require sources of funding, will Liabilities or equity.

Why you might prefer to borrow and pay interest rather than making a capital increase and pay a dividend?

Let's analyze each situation:

If you take loans, in addition to returning the borrowed money, the firm will have to pay interest. That interest not only involves an outlay of funds but that already is a cost to the company. However, if the company has earnings year after year, you can deduct the interest from the tax base for calculating the tax. At the end, the cost of financing in this case will be:

loans or contributions

That is, if you pay 100 interest but can deduct it from your income tax whose rate (tax rate) is 35%, the financial cost ends up being $ 65, this would be $ 100 of interest less than $ 35 tax.

In turn, it is worth mentioning that the $ 35 they save when calculating the tax is called tax shield.

In conclusion, applying for a loan will have an equivalent to the interest rate financial cost less the tax shield and an expenditure equivalent to the repayment and interest payment funds, which depend on the conditions agreed in the contract.

Now consider the possibility of asking shareholders money by increasing capital. In this case, shareholders may not claim the return of the issued capital as in the case of loans, but will be taking a greater risk by immobilizing the contribution made. The advantage for shareholders is that the money provided grants rights to the company, but on the other hand is taking what is called a residual risk which means that dividends charged after the firm has met its obligations enforceable.

Therefore, presumably they are intending to return for its investment a return that is higher than the interest rate of the loan. The impact on the firm will that will cost higher funding because the dividend is higher than the interest, but also in most countries, money paid to shareholders in return for their investment can not deduct tax earnings, ie, no tax shield is generated.

So far we can conclude that the financial cost of shareholders' equity is greater than the financial cost of third party capital.

So general manager should always take loans instead of requesting a capital increase?

It will not always be so. To reach the conclusions of the previous section, we must consider the life cycle of companies. Generally, you can access such alternatives are mature companies already regularly paid income tax. Depending on the financial market in which they operate, they can get loans from third-placed debt at competitive rates in the market in which traded rather than bank loans at higher rates.

For an SME or company that is at the stage of release or growth, not always this possibility is applied, because as unlisted, the only loans they can access are bank, the usually more expensive than issuing a debt instrument on the market. In turn, it is not always consider this category of companies pay income tax regularly, so little good would the tax shield as their taxable income is a great loss. Of course, if in the following years reversed the tax loss situation, usually the world's laws allow you to take the losses for previous years.

In addition to the consideration of the life cycle of the company, it should be considered the financing structure of the company against such decisions. Any firm can increase its liabilities by placing more debt, but as debt increases, also increases the risk of nonpayment. Therefore the interest rate of the second passive positioned likely to be greater than that obtained for the first and so on.
préstamos o aportes
Therefore, we can conclude that firms can not place more and more passive indefinitely to finance their resources, but each must do so while maintaining a balance between risk, return and liquidity.
